What is the Writing Desk in Graveyard Keeper 2?
The Writing Desk is the workstation of the Writing Room — the basement under your house — and it is where the game’s paper economy starts. Skins from your autopsy table come in one side; Leather Scrolls, Clean Paper, Ink, notebooks and Science Kits come out the other, and every one of those products exists to feed research, sermons or quests. The build panel is titled Writing Room, while the location label above the HUD reads Writing Basement — same room, two names.

How to Get a Writing Desk In Graveyard Keeper 2
How do you unlock and build the Writing Desk?
The blueprint lives in the Theology branch of the Tech Tree. Open Character → Tech Tree, switch to the Theology tab, and the Writing Desk blueprint sits at the start of the writing line — the checked walkthrough calls it “one of the first things you get there”, which is why the desk is affordable long before the church machinery deeper in the same branch.
The blueprint tooltip prints the full build cost — 4 planks, 6 nails, 1 polished bronze. Source frame: Quick Tips at 0:30.
You build it from the room’s own panel. Interact with the Writing Room floor and the build menu lists everything the room accepts — Simple Chest, Jewelry Table, Zombie Supplier Station and the Writing Desk, plus Remove. The Writing Desk row asks for the same three materials the tooltip showed.
Two independent captures agree on the cost: 4 Wooden Planks, 6 Bronze Nails, 1 Polished Bronze. Source frame: The Ginger Empire at 0:08.
Community wiki data records the same trio (4 / 6 / 1) for patch 1.007, so this is one of the few stations whose build cost you can plan around without guessing.
From Skin to Clean Paper: the desk’s paper line
The paper route starts at the morgue, not the desk. A Skin taken from a body becomes Leather Scroll, and scrolls become Clean Paper. The captured recipe window pairs the two: the Skin input is flagged red while the ingredient is still on the autopsy table, and the Skin tooltip notes it is “Crafted at: Autopsy Table I, Autopsy Table II”.
The Skin input glows red because the stack is still downstairs — the desk cannot pull from the morgue by itself. Source frame: Quick Tips at 0:40.
Both checked creators were on this exact errand: paper and ink for the nun’s quest. One Skin is recorded as 4 Leather Scrolls and one scroll as 6 Clean Paper in the project’s community research notes; the frame here shows the outputs but not a readable ratio, so treat the per-craft yields as community figures and read the counts in your own craft window. A garden-fed alternative exists — Flax pressed into paper away from the desk — covered by the Flax guide.
The Ink recipe: Ash, Water and Melted Fat
Ink is the desk’s chemistry recipe, and its shopping list spans the whole base: 1 Ash + 1 Water + 1 Melted Fat → 4 Ink. The capture below shows all three input slots at one apiece and the inkwell output — and the hovered Water bottle quietly confirms the alchemy angle, since its tooltip reads “Runes: 1 green”.
Three ingredients, one each, four Ink out — and Water already carries a green rune for later alchemy work. Source frame: The Ginger Empire at 0:58.
Where each input comes from, per the checked narrations:
- Ash — burned at the Crematorium. Its blueprint is in the Anatomy and alchemy tab, and the walkthrough builds it in the morgue once and for all, unlike the first game’s rebuildable forest pyre.
- Water — from the well; the narrator keeps a stock of it downstairs so the desk never waits.
- Melted Fat — crafted at the Distillation Cube, which you unlock and place in the alchemy lab.

Science Kit I: the desk’s research product
The desk’s priciest recipe is also the reason alchemists build it. A Science Kit I consumes 1 Alchemy Flask + 5 Clean Paper + 1 Ink and returns 3 kits per craft in the community data. The captured window shows the demand row exactly — the flask slot reads 0/1 in red because that save had just spent its last flask, while paper (38/5) and ink (9/1) are stocked.
1 flask + 5 paper + 1 ink per batch — the flask is what actually gates the kit line. Source frame: Quick Tips at 0:53.
Flasks come out of the alchemy chain (glassblowing at the furnace), so the kit line quietly links your smithing, your paper stock and your ink supply. The kits themselves are what the Dream Dust walkthrough decomposes at the Study Table for its burst of Science.
How the Writing Desk feeds the Study Table
Put a Clean Paper stack on the Study Table in the Alchemy Lab and the dialog is blunt: “Decomposing this item will give you +1” Science per sheet. Paper is the cheap fuel; Science Kits are the concentrate. Either way, the desk is upstream of every study you will ever run — and study is only half the bill, because the table charges Faith too.

The cost line varies per item. The same save studies Peat for 1 Faith + 2 Science — the requirement chips read 15/1 and 10/2 — and once the study resolves, the popup prints the item’s Compound, the runes that alchemy crafting will consume.

Those runes are the whole point from the desk’s perspective — studied ingredients are the ones the Laboratory accepts, and its tooltip says so outright: discover the formula, and every formula you have found is recorded in the Folio.
“All the formulas you’ve discovered are recorded in the Folio.” Source frame: Quick Tips at 1:56.
The full research loop — costs, runes, exact-match mixes — is the territory of the alchemy guide, and the rune reference lists what each ingredient is worth once studied.
Plan the Writing Desk chains with the calculators
The desk sits at the junction of three supply lines — Skin from the morgue, Ash from the crematorium, Flasks from the furnace — so a small shortage anywhere stalls the whole writing floor:
- The production calculator costs each craft end to end, so you can see whether Skin, Ash or flasks is the real bottleneck this week.
- The Science Kit line only matters if research is actually spending Science — the tech tree guide covers how the branches and their point colors work.
- Paper and Ink are quest items early (the nun’s errand in both checked walkthroughs) and research fuel forever; the Dream Dust page shows the first thing most players spend the Science on.
